TEN announcementEach year, 11 federal agencies set aside more than $2 billion to fund research and development at small businesses, through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program and the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program. Federal agencies issue solicitations to small companies, including start-ups, for proposals on specific research and product development.

SIEMENS CEO TO SPEAK AT URMC – Monday, Feb. 25TH at 12:30pm

SIEMENS President and CEO Gregory Sorensen, M.D., will lecture at URMC at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, discussing how new payment models hinder technical innovation – and how smart companies are facing those challenges.

His hour-long talk, titled “Pursuing Innovation with PET-MRI in an Era of Value-based Healthcare,” takes place in the Class of ’62 Auditorium (G-9425) and focuses on Biograph mMR, or PET-MRI technology. Sorensen, who holds seven patents, has a deep understanding of the value medical technology provides to clinical practitioners – and a keen appreciation of the vital role measurable outcomes play in modern health care delivery.

Lunch will be provided at noon. The special lecture is presented jointly by the Department of Imaging Sciences and SIEMENS Healthcare North America. You can view and print a flyer to help promote the talk in your area, here.

The Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) will host its second Town Hall Meeting in the lobby of the Saunders Research Building on Thursday, May 31st, from 3:00pm to 4:30pm. Everyone is welcome – especially everyone from the research community at the University. We’ll start with a few brief presentations from new research groups that will soon move into the Saunders Building, information regarding new soon-to-be-available healthy food choices at the Saunders Building café, and some updates regarding the building. We’ll save plenty of time to answer your questions and for general discussion. Snacks will be served. Please join us and get to know your “research neighbors” and the CTSI a little better.

The Center for Emerging and Innovative Sciences (CEIS) is holding its annual University Technology Showcase on Thursday, April 5th. Researchers from the University of Rochester, RIT, Cornell and Clarkson will display the innovative research they are doing and how it can help companies develop new products, processes, and services. The showcase also gives university researchers the opportunity to learn about areas of interest to companies that can help guide future research.

Also present will be representatives from the university technology transfer offices to discuss inventions already available for licensing. There will be keynote speakers from leading NY State companies and development centers describing the role of innovation in their organizations.
